novaya zemlya or, a strange, new land
written by Mila Golubov directed by Daniella Caggiano performed March 7, 2013 at HERE Mainstage In conjunction with the Downtown Urban Theater Festival AND Saturday August 10th- Friday August 23rd at the CSV Flamboyan Theatre In conjunction with the New York International Fringe Festival Serge and Dascha Apartov are brother and sister, living in an idyllic Ukrainian village oblivious to the world at large for over ten years. Many things happen in this time: the Chernobyl meltdown, the fall of Communism, the mass exodus of Jews and the rise of Roseanne Barr among them. As the Apartov children become aware of the world beyond their dacha, their illusions collapse faster than you can say U.S.S.R.. Join them in the Motherland as they experience sex, love, and American migration in this fairy tale romp. There will be hearty helpings of vodka, Russian roulette, and an appearance by Baba Yaga if you're lucky. |
